Pizza: from Naples and Tramonti to the rest of the world<\/h1>\n

Do you know that the small town of Tramonti<\/strong>, on the Amalfi Coast<\/strong>, is considered the capital of Pizza<\/strong>? The most worldwide famous Italian dish was invented in Naples, but in Tramonti they prepare a different -but still tasty- version.<\/p>\n

HISTORY OF PIZZA<\/h2>\n

Pizza consists of a flatbread typically topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella<\/strong> cheese and baked in an oven. It can also be topped with other ingredients such as meat, vegetables, or fish.<\/p>\n

This dish has a long and uncertain history. We know that the word “pizza” already existed in the year 900, but similar flatbreads already existed in the times of the Egyptians and Romans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Another certain thing is that Margherita pizza<\/strong>\u00a0 was invented in Naples, in 1889, by Raffaele Esposito in honor of Queen Margherita of Savoy and the Italian flag.<\/p>\n

Then, after the Second World War<\/strong>, more than 3000 pizza maker left the town of Tramonti to emigrate to Northern Italy. They opened their pizzerias and this dish became popular all over the country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

WHAT MAKES THE PIZZA OF TRAMONTI DIFFERENT<\/h2>\n

The authentic Tramonti version is made with typical local ingredients, such as mozzarella from the Lattari Mountains, local varieties of tomato, and olive oil produced in Salerno. In addition, it is made with wholemeal flour<\/strong>. Finally, the cooking temperature is lower<\/strong> and never exceeds 350\u00b0C. The result is a tasty but digestible dish.<\/p>\n

  • The dish is so important to Tramonti that every year, between 8 and 9 August, the town organizes a pizza festival<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • In Italy, there are other variants<\/strong>, in addition to those of Naples and Tramonti. Furthermore, there are many “cuts”: round, sliced, pizza by the meter, but also calzone<\/em>, fried pizza, and much more.<\/li>\n
  • The toppings are innumerable and sometimes quirky, but most Italians don’t appreciate pineapple pizza<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • According to a study, in Italy, there are 75,500 pizzerias<\/strong>. They prepare an average of 80 pizzas a day, that is 1,884,480,000 a year!<\/li>\n
  • The city with the highest number of pizzerias is not in Italy. It’s New York<\/strong>!<\/li>\n
  • The longest pizza<\/strong> in the world was made in 2017 in Fontana, California, and was almost 2km long<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    THE TOWN OF TRAMONTI<\/h2>\n

    The small town of Tramonti lies on the Amalfi Coast, halfway between Naples and Salerno, at an altitude of 400 meters. The territory includes 13 villages<\/strong>\u00a0and numerous historical buildings<\/strong>, such as convents, castles, churches. It has about 4000 inhabitants and it is famous for the production of wines, handicrafts, and -of course-\u00a0 <\/span>pizza.<\/p>\n

    You may not know it but according to some the Tramontana wind<\/strong> owes its name to the town of Tramonti. The name would have spread thanks to the compasses. The Amalfi people were the first to use them, but compasses did not indicate the cardinal points but the winds.<\/p>\n
