Its origins trace back to ancient Roman times, when the site was believed to host a villa owned by Agrippa Postumus, grandson of Emperor Augustus. Over the centuries, the location served various functions, including a monastic convent in the 13th century, and later, a residence for the Labonia family, who were barons from Calabria. They built much of the structure we see today in the 16th century.
The villa’s most transformative chapter came in 1905, when it was purchased by William Waldorf Astor, a wealthy American magnate and diplomat. Astor restored and embellished the property, commissioning major works to elevate it into a true Renaissance-inspired retreat. He also undertook the development of the villa’s iconic gardens, importing ancient artifacts and rare plants from around the world to create an enchanting botanical haven.
During World War II, Villa Tritone served as the seat of the Dutch Embassy from 1943 to 1945. In 2012, the property gained attention again when it was purchased by Kamilla Dzhanashiya, a young Russian heiress, for a reported €35 million.
