Marmeeting, the spectacular high diving competition at furore
On the Amalfi Coast, there is an enchanting place – the Fjord of Furore – where you can attend one of the most incredible sporting events. We are talking about Marmeeting, the high diving competition.
THE FJORD OF FURORE
The Fjord of Furore is a natural inlet that has been dug over the centuries by the action of the waters of the Schiato torrent. It is located between the towns of Agerola and Conca dei Marini.
The Fjord is about 1 km long and its maximum depth is about 30 meters. The particularity of this place is that it is surrounded by high cliffs which makes it reachable only by boat or via a suspended bridge, Ponte della Maddalena.
Every year, this place attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world. And many of them like to watch the high diving competition from the small beach nearby.
HIGH DIVING AND MARMEETING
By high diving, we mean a sports specialty that consists of dives from heights between 23 and 28 meters for men, and between 18 and 23 meters for women.
Usually, divers jump directly from rocks or from small platforms. In the case of the Marmeeting, they jump from the bridge over the Fjord of Furore (about 28 meters high).
Once in the air, divers have 3 sec. free flight during which they must coordinate their movements with precision. It is not just an aesthetic question: they impact the water at about 100 km/h and it could be dangerous.
So, divers must not only be physically prepared but also have great control and a lot of courage.
HOW DOES MARMEETING WORK?
Divers from all over the world come to Furore to compete and try to win the coveted title of Marmeeting Champion.
The competition includes two rounds:
– in the first round, divers must perform a compulsory dive and a voluntary dive;
– in the second round, the 10 best divers of the first round perform another voluntary dive.
The jury is made up of five international judges, each of whom votes for each dive with a score from 0 to 10. The highest and lowest marks are not valid. The sum of the three remaining scores is multiplied by the difficulty coefficient.
The winner is the diver who has obtained the highest total score.
MORE THAN A COMPETITION
Oreste Varese, the creator of Marmeeting, considers it more than a sports event. It’s also an opportunity to sensitize people on environmental protection.
For us, it is definitely an event worth participating in during a holiday on the Amalfi Coast.
