About Monte Faito
Mount Faito is a prominent peak located on the Amalfi and Sorrento Coast in Italy. It is part of the Monti Lattari mountain range and rises to an elevation of approximately 1.131 meters (3,711 feet) above sea level. The mountain offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding coastline, including the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno.
This mountain has long been one of the main sources of timber in Italy, so much so that it was from here that the lumber used to build great vessels at the time of Ferdinand I King of the Two Sicilies, including the very famous Amerigo Vespucci, came.
Mount Faito is known for its lush forests, diverse flora and fauna, and numerous hiking trails. It is a perfect destination in any season, especially in summer when it becomes a cool shelter from the heat. Moreover, there is also no shortage of restaurants where you can sample local products, from chestnuts to cheese like Provolone del Monaco.
Ascending to the Summit of Mount Faito
Do you want to climb Mount Faito? Here’s what to expect!
Once you arrive at the base of the mountain, you are greeted by the option of taking a leisurely hike or opting for the ascent via the cable car.
If you decide for the hike, you are going to venture forth into the verdant embrace of the forest, surrounded by the symphony of birdsong and the rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze.
There are different paths to follow.
Among the most beautiful trails on Mount Faito is the Angel Trail, which smoothly leads to the Monastery of St. Michael, founded back in the 6th century.
Equally spectacular, but much more challenging to walk, is CAI path number 330, which starts right from the monastery. Along the path you will encounter places of evocative beauty, such as the Croce della Canocchia and the Sorgente dell’Acqua Santa (Holy Water Spring). This spring is said to have arisen from a blow struck with a spear by St. Michael the Archangel. Furthermore, it is the place where a curious specimen of the carnivorous plant Pinguicula hirtiflora lives. As you meander along the trail, each twist and turn reveals new wonders – from hidden waterfalls cascading down moss-covered rocks to fragrant wildflowers carpeting the forest floor. The path leads you ever higher, offering ever-expanding vistas of the coastline below.
If you choose the cable car, you are going to be whisked away on a journey through the verdant slopes of the mountain. As you ascend higher and higher, the views become increasingly awe-inspiring, with the shimmering expanse of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius stretching out before you.
The funicular railway was built in August 1952. It departs from the station in the city of Castellammare di Stabia and reaches the summit in just 8 minutes.
Upon reaching the summit, you step out into the crisp mountain air, greeted by panoramic vistas that take your breath away. From this vantage point, you can see the entire sweep of the coastline, from the rugged cliffs of Capri to the pastel-hued villages of Positano and Amalfi. It’s a sight that feels straight out of a postcard.
