Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Coast are undoubtedly famous for the beautiful views, the incredible sea and the typically Italian atmosphere. But there is another feature that makes a holiday in these places particularly enjoyable: the local food!
Tasty and healthy at the same time, the traditional cuisine is a real pleasure you have to try. So, let’s find out some of the best foods and dishes of the Sorrento Coast.
BEST DISHES AND LOCAL FOOD OF THE SORRENTO COAST
Sorrento lemons
We must start our list with one of the typical products of the Sorrento coast: lemons.
Sorrento lemons are PGI certified products. They are quite large, never weigh less than 80 grams, elongated in shape. The peel is yellow and thick, but very fragrant thanks to the presence of essential oils.
The pulp is light yellow and succulent, and the flavor has the right balance between sweetness and acidity. In short, they are really good! And they are perfect for different recipes, from first courses to desserts. Furthermore, they are the main ingredient for the Limoncello liqueur.
Gnocchi alla Sorrentina
Is there a local food more typical of Sorrento than Gnocchi alla Sorrentina? “Sorrentina” means “from Sorrento” and this name says it all.
They are gnocchi prepared by hand with flour, water and potatoes, cooked in boiling water and seasoned with a tomato sauce, mozzarella fiordilatte, parmesan and basil. With the heat of the gnocchi, the mozzarella and parmesan begin to melt, creating a unique and flavorful sauce. But before serving, the gnocchi are also placed in an earthenware pan and browned in the oven.
They are terribly good!
Provolone del Monaco
The Sorrento coast is a slightly mountainous area with a good tradition in the production of cheeses. In fact, the name of the nearby Lattari Mountains derives from “Latte“, that is “milk“.
Among all the local cheeses, you must try the Provolone del Monaco.
It is a stretched curd cheese made from raw milk. It is semi-hard, has a pear shape and a thin crust. Usually the aging lasts between 6 and 18 months. The taste is intense, with a spiciness that varies according to the aging.
You can eat it alone with a piece of bread or grate it as a condiment on dishes.
Delizia al Limone
Although this cold dessert was only invented in 1978 by the local pastry chef Carmine Marzuillo, Delizia al Limone (that is, Lemon Delight) is one of the most representative foods of the Sorrento coast and the Amalfi coast.
It is a soft dome of sponge cake soaked in a Limoncello-based syrup, stuffed and covered with lemon-based cream, and decorated with sprinkles of whipped cream.
You can find it in the cake version or in single portion. In any case, you will easily find it in any pastry shop!
