Infinity Terrace, a natural Balcony overlooking the Amalfi Coast
One of the most beautiful viewpoints on the entire Amalfi Coast is located in Ravello. More precisely, inside Villa Cimbrone. We are talking about the Infinity Terrace.
What is the Infinity Terrace?
The Infinity Terrace (Terrazza dell’Infinito) is a real natural balcony overlooking the Amalfi Coast, on a promontory 400 meters above sea level. The terrace was built following the natural slope of the land towards the sea, so it offers a great feeling of openness to the vastness of the panorama.
The paving is made of light-colored local stone, which creates a pleasant contrast with the greenery of the flourishing surrounding garden. However, the most representative detail of the Terrace on Infinity is its scenic balustrade, decorated with 18th-century marble busts and vases of colorful flowers that create splashes of color that appear even more vivid with the blue background of the sky and sea.
The Infinity Terrace and Villa Cimbrone
The history of the Infinity Terrace is linked to that of Villa Cimbrone, the magnificent building that houses it.
First of all, the name “Cimbrone” derives from the rocky ridge on which the villa stands, the first nucleus of which dates back to around the 11th century, when some Roman aristocratic families took refuge in the Ravello area to escape barbarian invasions.
Over the centuries, several noble families owned Villa Cimbrone, which, however, fell into disrepair until the late 19th century, when English nobleman Ernest William Beckett fell in love with it and decided to buy it. Beckett restored and refurbished the ruins, creating an enchanted place where one can admire styles from different eras, archaeological finds and travel memories.
Beckett also created the famous Infinity Terrace, inspired by the breathtaking landscape seen from that very spot. From the terrace, even today, people can admire the Amalfi Coast, the sparkling sea, the sheer cliffs, and the towns of Maiori and Minori. That is why, today, it is one of the most visited places on the Amalfi Coast.
What makes the Infinity Terrace so special
You might have guessed that the view from the terrace is crazy and is the highlight of this place. This is where visitors take perfect photos for their social profiles, and the more romantic ones choose it as a location for wedding proposals, especially at sunset.
However, there is more that makes the Infinity Terrace enchanting. In fact, it is set in a lush garden filled with colorful flowers, citrus trees and marble sculptures. If you are looking for a relaxing activity, a walk through the avenues is for you.
If you are an artist, know that this place has been a source of inspiration for many artists and writers. Maybe you, too, will come up with new ideas for music, novels, or paintings!
How to get to the Terrace
Once you enter Villa Cimbrone, you can reach the Infinity Terrace by walking through the beautiful gardens. The main route is the Viale dell’Immenso, a long tree-lined avenue along which you’ll encounter some striking spots, such as the wisteria arbor that turns into a flowering tunnel in spring, and the Crypt, a small chapel carved into the rock and decorated with frescoes dating back to the 13th century. Since the path to the terrace is slightly uphill and has some uneven sections, we recommend you wear comfortable shoes.
Ravello, on the other hand, is easily accessible from the other towns on the Amalfi Coast thanks to the scenic road that connects them.
Remember that to visit the Infinity Terrace you must purchase an entrance ticket that includes access to Villa Cimbrone and its gardens. The cost of the ticket varies depending on the time of year and any current promotions. If you want to visit Villa Cimbrone during the high season, we recommend that you book your ticket in advance, especially if you want to participate in a guided tour.
