Have You Ever Been to the Crapolla Fjord on the Amalfi Coast?
The Amalfi Coast is undeniably one of the most breathtaking and iconic coastlines in the world. Towns like Positano and Ravello draw thousands of visitors every year. The same goes for Capri, famous for its Blue Grotto. Yet, there are still some hidden gems that remain largely undiscovered. One such place is the Crapolla Fjord.
The Beauty of Crapolla Fjord
You might have heard of the Furore Fjord—but have you ever come across Crapolla? It’s a natural inlet nestled between towering cliffs, with a pebble beach. It is located in Massa Lubrense, more precisely between Reccomone and Punta Taschiero.
Crapolla is part of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area, which helps preserve its pristine waters and unspoiled natural environment. It’s the perfect spot if you love swimming, snorkeling, and especially hiking.
How to Reach Crapolla Fjord and Its Beach
The beach at Crapolla Fjord can only be reached on foot, via a challenging hiking trail. Starting from the main square in Torca, follow the path past the Chapel of San Pietro. According to local legend, the chapel was built using stones from an old abbey that once stood on the ruins of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the god Apollo. In fact, the name “Crapolla” is said to come from “Apollo.”
The trail follows an old mule path and leads to a scenic overlook known as “La Guardia.” As you follow the white-and-red-marked trail, you’ll be treated to stunning views: to one side, the Li Galli archipelago off the coast of Positano; to the other, Punta Penna marking the edge of the beautiful bay of Marina del Cantone. To get down to the beach, you’ll need to descend about 700 stone steps carved into the rock. It’s a workout—but absolutely worth it.
Just before reaching the beach, you’ll also come across the remains of ancient Roman villas and cisterns that local fishermen still use today.
Before setting off on your hike, make sure to bring water and snacks with you—you won’t find any places to buy them along the way. Also, keep in mind that the beach stays in the shade for most of the day. It’s great for staying cool, but not ideal if you’re hoping to sunbathe.
What to See near the Fjord
While you’re in the area, there are plenty of other beautiful spots worth exploring.
Just a short hike away is the Bay of Ieranto, another protected cove with crystal-clear waters and stunning views of Capri. The nearby town of Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi offers panoramic vistas over both the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno, as well as excellent restaurants featuring local cuisine. Don’t miss a visit to the Punta Campanella Lighthouse, located at the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula—it’s a scenic trek with rewarding sea views and fascinating legends tied to Ulysses and the Sirens.
And of course, just a short drive away, you’ll find all the charming towns of the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Coast waiting to be explored. In these picturesque villages, you can enjoy delicious local specialties like pizza, fresh mozzarella, and Limoncello. You’ll also find artisan boutiques and craft workshops offering high-quality souvenirs, along with countless scenic spots perfect for snapping your next Instagram-worthy photo.
