When it comes to sailing spots, the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Coast are hard to beat. With crystal-clear waters, stunning coastal scenery, islands, and plenty of sheltered coves and bays to explore, there’s something for everyone here.
But what are the best sailing spots on the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Coast? Read on for our pick of the best destinations for a day out on the water.
OUR BEST SAILING SPOTS ON THE AMALFI COAST AND SORRENTO COAST
– Amalfi
From the sea, the town of Amalfi is even more scenic, with the multicolored houses clinging to the rock of Monte Cerreto. Besides the beautiful landscape, Amalfi is one of the best sailing spots thanks to its sheltered bay, which makes it perfect also for beginners. Moreover, there are several marinas where you can moor up and explore the town.
– Positano
Positano is a symbol of the Amalfi Coast and is also an excellent place for sailing. Here you will find spectacular cliffs, beautiful crowded beaches but also many sheltered bays in which to anchor. However, if you prefer you can moor in one of the two marinas in the city.
– Capri
Capri is an unmissable destination for any sailor who visits the Amalfi Coast or the Sorrento Coast. The island is home to some of the best sailing conditions in the area, with numerous sheltered bays and coves to explore. There are also a few marinas on the island, in which to dock to explore the island.
Additionally, the coast of Capri has plenty of caves, including the Blue Grotto “La Grotta Azzurra”. This cave is famous for the particular reflections of light created by the sun’s rays that enter from the outside of the cave and seem to illuminate the water from below. Definitely a must-see!
Absolutely not to be missed are the Faraglioni, three high spurs of rock that rise from the sea. Seen up close on the boat they are even more impressive.
– Ischia
If Capri is the most famous island, Ischia is the largest one. We have decided to include it in our list of best sailing spots on the Amalfi & Sorrento Coast for its sheltered bays and numerous marinas to moor. However, Ischia also has other peculiarities. Indeed, the island is dominated by Mount Epomeo, which is a volcano. For this reason, in Ischia there are natural thermal springs and volcanic muds that attract tourists for their healing powers. In addition, there are charming towns, forests, archaeological remains, and wonderful beaches on the island. In short, a boat trip to Ischia is a must!
– Procida
Procida is a small island off the coast of Naples. It too has sheltered bays and marinas for mooring. Less popular than Capri and Ischia, this island is just as beautiful but much less crowded with tourists! The sea is clear and the views are breathtaking.
During a boat trip to Procida, it is absolutely worth stopping in Corricella, a beautiful seaside village with colorful houses. It is such an enchanting place that both Apple and Microsoft have used the image of the village to advertise their products.
– Naples
Even though it is not part of the Amalfi and Sorrento coasts, Naples is one of the best sailing spots in the area. The reason? Its wide bay and the panorama of the city with Mount Vesuvius in the background. Moreover, the city is also home to a number of historical landmarks and attractions, making it a great place to explore.
When sailing in Naples, be sure to keep an eye out for the Castel dell’Ovo. This castle is located on an island just off the coast of Naples and is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
When to go sailing on the Amalfi Coast?
The best time for sailing on the Amalfi and Sorrento coasts is from spring to autumn. However, July and August are the peak months for the tourist season and the sea gets crowded too. Therefore, if you are looking for a more exclusive experience, the best months are May, June, and September. During these months, the sailing conditions are often perfect, and ideal also for beginners. The views are always exceptional and the sea is always great for swimming, diving, and snorkeling.
So, happy sailing! 🙂
