Vietri sul Mare is located in the easternmost part of the Amalfi Coast, not far from the city of Salerno, on hills overlooking the sea. And it is a great destination for a day trip!

1) Discover the ceramics
The main attraction of Vietri sul Mare is not a place or a monument, but a tradition. In fact, the town is famous in the world for its ceramics. They are brightly colored and often decorated with scenes from daily life. These ceramics are everywhere! You can find theme in artisans’ workshops, shops, and also in the Museum of Ceramics. Of course, they are a perfect souvenir: you can use them to give your home a Mediterranean twist or just as decorative objects.
2) Strolling around and discover the historic center of Vietri sul Mare
Obviously, the best way to discover Vietri sul Mare is by getting lost in the narrow streets of the historic center.
If you like local shopping or, stroll along the main street is Via Umberto I. Here, you will find the ceramic shops, but also the shops selling handmade sandals and another typical product: the “pezze di Positano”. They are colorful Provencal style fabrics, known all over the world.
Then, you will find the Villa Comunale di Vietri and the Solimene factory, with its very particular design. Finally, in Piazza Duomo you can enjoy a coffee or an ice cream.
In Piazza Duomo, at the highest point of the historic center, is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, or Cathedral of Vietri. You recognize it for the beautiful and colorful majolica dome. This church was built in the 10th century as a private church, it was destroyed by the Saracens and then rebuilt. The current building dates back to the 17th century.
Inside, the church has a nice and clean appearance and obviously there is no lack of ceramic decorations on the altars, except for the high altar which is decorated with marble.
Next to the Cathedral of Vietri is the Archconfraternity of the Santissima Annunziata and the Santissimo Rosario. This is the oldest brotherhood in the city. The building that houses it dates back to the 1600s. The outside has the inevitable ceramics, while inside there are frescoes of the eighteenth century.
3) Go to the beach
Among the things to do in Vietri sul Mare there is certainly the beach.
Marina di Vietri is the most popular beach but it is also the most recent. In fact it is the result of a flood in the 1950s. The beach of Baia is sandy and easy to reach, but it is located near the port. The Crespella beach is really special thanks to the presence of a 16th century watchtower.
4) Visit Albori
Albori is located 2km from Vietri sul Mare. It is worth a visit because it is part of the official list of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Indeed, it is at 300 meters a.s.l., surrounded by a dense forest. It means that here you can find peace, but also an extraordinary panorama.
It is a fishing village where time seems to have stopped: the houses are still those of the past, built in stone and lime, while the enchanting church of Santa Margherita still shows the magnificent frescoes of the 600.
5) Try the local food
Tasting local food is one of the best things to do in Vietri sul Mare!
Among the typical dishes there are the “pisciti è criatur”, pasta with seafood, the paccheri with clams and potatoes, the spleen stuffed with parsley, chilli and mint. And then, there are the typical products of the area, such as fish, buffalo mozzarella or limoncello liqueur.
