The Enchanting City of Caserta: What to See
Have you ever heard about Caserta? This Italian city is approximately 36 kilometers north of Naples. Not so far form the famed Amalfi Coast or the ruins of Pompeii, it is perfect for a day trip.
Let’s find out what to see in Caserta!
Four things you absolutely must see in Caserta
While it might not be as famous as Rome, Florence, or Venice, Caserta has its own unique charm. From its stunning royal palace to its lush gardens, it offers an unforgettable mix of history, culture, and architectural grandeur.
1) The Crown Jewel: Royal Palace of Caserta
One cannot speak of Caserta without mentioning its pièce de résistance – the Royal Palace of Caserta.
This UNESCO World Heritage site is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the Bourbon dynasty that once ruled over the Kingdom of Naples. Designed by the renowned architect Luigi Vanvitelli, the palace is a stunning example of 18th-century Baroque architecture.
As you step inside, be prepared to be awestruck by the sheer scale and magnificence of the palace. The grand staircase, adorned with marble statues and intricate stuccowork, leads to a series of sumptuous rooms, each more impressive than the last. The highlight, undoubtedly, is the breathtaking Hall of Mirrors, a space reminiscent of its more famous counterpart in the Palace of Versailles.
The Royal Palace of Caserta is such a majestic building that it has been the set for movies, including Episode 1 and Episode 2 of Star Wars.
2) The Gardens: A Verdant Oasis
The palace is not the only jewel in Caserta’s crown; its gardens are equally remarkable. Stretching over 120 hectares, they are a masterpiece of landscape architecture. Lined with statues, fountains, and meticulously trimmed hedges, the gardens provide a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
A leisurely stroll along the pathways reveals hidden corners, each offering a unique perspective of the palace and its surroundings. The Grand Cascade, an awe-inspiring waterfall that flows into a reflective basin, is a particular highlight. The sense of tranquility makes it an ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon picnic or a peaceful moment of reflection.
3) Casertavecchia: A Glimpse into the Past
For those seeking a taste of authentic Italian village life, a visit to Casertavecchia is a must.
Perched on a hill overlooking the modern city, this historic village exudes an old-world charm that transports visitors back in time. Narrow cobblestone streets wind their way through medieval houses, leading to charming piazzas with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
The Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo, dating back to the 9th century, stands as a testament to the village’s rich history. Inside, visitors can admire intricate frescoes and marvel at the centuries-old architecture. After exploring the village, be sure to indulge in local culinary delights at one of the quaint trattorias that dot the streets.
4) The Aquedotto Carolino: the Impressive Work of Hydraulic Architecture
Another must-see is the Carolino Aqueduct, or “Vanvitelli Aqueduct,” which feeds some of Caserta’s historic parks, including those of the Royal Palace. King Ferdinand IV inaugurated it in 1762 by, to carry water for 38 km, from Mount Taburno to the city.
Although much of the aqueduct is underground, some sections are visible. The most scenic section is that of the “Ponti della Valle” (Bridges of the Valley). It is a tufa structure composed of three tiers of overlapping arches, resting on more than forty square pylons. Roman-inspired, this construction reaches almost 60 mt in height (196 ft) and is awe-inspiring in its grandeur.
