Cala Mitigliano, A Gorgeous Beach On The Sorrento Coast
The small towns of the Sorrento Peninsula are undoubtedly enchanting, but this stretch of Italian coast not far from Naples offers wonderful scenic views and perfect beaches to admire them. One of these is Cala Mitigliano, near Massa Lubrense, about 4 km from the town of Sorrento.
The Beach of Cala Mitigliano
Cala Mirigliano is located within the territory of the Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella.
The small beach is characterized by rocks and pebbles, and is surrounded by high limestone cliffs overlooking the sea. The clear sea offers a wide view that can reach as far as the island of Capri. What makes Cala Mitigliano even more special is the presence of an old tower building on the right side, now inaccessible, that was once used for lime production when the beach was home to a stone quarry.
Do not expect many services: there is a small bar and it is possible to rent a sunbed, but they are so few that they sell out immediately in the morning. Cala Mitigliano is a great place to relax, but also to swim or snorkel. The more daring can go exploring the nearby caves.
The Caves of Cala Mitigliano
The Emerald Grotto and the Blue Grotto are just two of the many sea caves on the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula. And some others are in the area of Cala Mitigliano.
The most famous are the Mitigliano Cave and the Corvina Cave. The latter owes its name to a fish, sciaena umbra (corvina in Italian), whose species populates the cave. The cave entrance is about 6 meters high and leads inside a tunnel about 80 meters long that branches off in 3 directions with several chambers characterized by stalactites. The cave can be visited but one must be an experienced diver. Mitigliano Cave is equally beautiful. Inside, divers will be able to admire all the colorful local marine life.
How to Get to the Beach
You can reach Cala Mitigliano on foot or by boat.
To get to the beach on foot you have to follow a picturesque but challenging cobblestone path. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the beach. The starting point is Piazza Santa Croce, the main square of Termini, a hamlet of Massa Lubrense. Remember to wear a good pair of sneakers!
