What To See In The Medieval Hamlet Of Pontone
The medieval village of Pontone is one of the six contrade that make up the municipality of Scala, the oldest town on the Amalfi Coast. It is a place far from the hustle and bustle of more famous towns such as Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. Here, therefore, you will find a more authentic atmosphere and a lot of nature. A perfect place especially for those who love outdoor activities.
The History of Pontone
Also known as Scalella, since the early Middle Ages Pontone was an important place for the local population as a stop along the route between Amalfi and Atrani. In particular, During the Duchy of Amalfi Pontone was a fortified citadel that later became a residence for local clergy and nobility. Even today, in the northernmost part are the old patrician residences, many still inhabited. However, when the Duchy lost power, the nobility moved elsewhere and the town lost its importance.
What to see in Pontone
Let’s take a look at the main attractions in town.
St. John the Baptist Square and the Church
The center of the town is St. John the Baptist Square, once the site of wool processing. In fact, a system of canals conveyed water from the mountains to the square, which became a huge pool for soaking raw wool that came from Puglia. Today the square is the heart of Pontone’s social life.
In the square is the Church of St. John the Baptist. The date of construction is uncertain but its structure suggests a medieval origin. However, some Byzantine architectural influences can be seen. It is a small church with a sober, rustic appearance.
The bell tower was built on an elevated rock ledge and has a clock from 1793 that is still working.
There is also a small column that sticks out horizontally from the front of the church, visible from across the square. A legend says that anyone who stood under the column would be granted the right to asylum and protection from abuse.
The remains of the Basilica of St. Eustace
The basilica was built in 1187 by the d’Afflitto family on the top of a mountain in a location overlooking the sea. The family chose this spot to show its power, as the church was visible from nearby towns and even from merchant ships at sea. Today only the outer walls, apses and crypt remain.
The Ziro Tower
On Mount Aureus stand the remains of Scalelle Castle, of which the Ziro Tower is a part. This defensive tower is one of the most famous monuments of the Amalfi Coast, not only for its location but also for its history. The tower, in fact, was the prison of Duchess Giovanna of Aragon.
Patrician residences
Although they cannot always be visited, it is worth taking a trip to see the ancient residences of the noble families who lived in Pontone. These include Palazzo Verone, Palazzo d’Afflitto, Palazzo Spina-Campanile and the Bishop’s Palace.
Trekking trails
From Pontone several trekking trails start or pass by, along which one can admire all the beauty of the Amalfi Coast. Monte Aureo is an excellent hiking destination, as is the Valle delle Ferriere or the path leading to the Ziro Tower.
